HISTORY OF GUINEA
What is currently called Guinea was once merely territory that was "owned", or had been conquered by different Empires. Some of these include;
- the Ghana Empire (10th-14th century)
- the Mali Empire (14th-16th century)
- the Songhai Empire (16th-18th century)
THE COLONIAL PERIOD OF GUINEA
In the early 1800's, the French military stormed the area of what is now Guinea (was then part of the Songhai Empire). Not long after this event, the French dominated and took over Guinea.
Under the French ruling, the country became the Territory of Guinea within French West Africa.
This lasted for many years until Guinea began to fight for independence. After a while, the France decided to step down and Guinea proclaimed itself an independent republic in 1958 with Sékou Touré as president.
SEKOU TOURE- DICTATORSHIP
Quickly after Sékou Touré became president of Guinea, the country became a one-party dictatorship.
Touré remained in power until his death in 1984, ending his ruling.
The current president of Guinea is Alpha Condé
HISTORY WITHIN PAST 5 YEARS
In September, 2009 - Soldiers open fire on a mass opposition rally at a stadium in Conakry, which had been called to urge military ruler Moussa Camara to step down. The Guinean Human Rights Organization said that 157 were killed in the violence and over 1200 people were injured. The military government said the death toll was 57, and banned all "subversive" gatherings.
