On October 1, 1960 Nigeria gained independence and was no longer considered a territory. However, Nigeria was not a republic until 1963. Just four years later a civil war erupted in this nation. Luckily the war only lasted three years. The conflict started due to a group of Igbo (a cultural Nigerian group) people that broke away from Nigeria and called themselves the Republic of Biafra. The war ended in 1667 and no civil wars have happened in Nigeria since.
Current event
In April of 2014 about 234 Nigerian girls were kidnapped from their school. The despicable person responsible for this attack is Boko Haram, the leader of an Islamic terrorist group. Haram believes that women should not be educated, instead he thinks they should cook and marry men. The girls were all students at Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok, Nigeria. Attempts have been made to find and retrieve the missing students, but none have been successful. First Lady, Michele Obama, from the US even tried to help. She created a hash-tag to spread awareness and encourage people to come forward if they know anything. Later in the year, around Halloween, Haram released a video in which he taunted the families of the girls. He said that the girls had all been converted to Muslim and had been married off. There is little hope for the families who are missing a family member due to this attack. Still, many will keep trying, and many will keep hoping.
